We encourage anyone interested in a Callaho horse to visit the farm (after making prior arrangements) any time during the try out period. This will be advertised and is normally about a month before the auction. This will afford you ample time in which to make a thorough assessment of the horses which may be suitable and enable you to make an informed, sensible decision before the auction. All the horses under saddle have been fully vetted. Throughout auction day our consulting Vet, Dr Nico Hendrikz, will be at the disposal of anyone needing a professional opinion related to the clinical exam or x-rays. X-ray images will also be available to your own Veterinarian for interpretation in the weeks before the auction (contact: Grant Store 082 339 9646 or The importance of consulting with the veterinarian regarding your chosen lots cannot be overstressed as it is extremely important for the potential buyer/owner to know every possible thing about the horse they are buying.

Seat reservations

While a limited number of day seats are available at the entrance gate on arrival, booking is advisable to avoid disappointment. All reservations (for day seats, VIP tables and the pavillion boxes) should be done via our website or directly through Helette (+27877009910 /


On arrival at the Stud on auction day, we suggest you register at the auction office as soon as convenient to avoid queues.


We will commence at 10am with a presentation of all the auction horses. After the presentation, please feel free to approach our training team with any questions you may have, or to visit the horses in their stables. You are welcome to ask for a horse to be stood up on hard ground for inspection.
The auction will commence with the stallion presentation at 3pm inside the Auction Hall. The auction process will be deliberate and transparent. To bid on a horse, please use your buyer’s card or hand signal clearly and ensure that the auctioneer or spotter understands your intentions.

Telephonic Bidding

Anyone unable to attend the auction in person may bid on a horse using one of three alternative methods:

  1. you may co-opt someone else to attend the auction and bid on your behalf with prior instructions regarding which horse(s) to bid on, and to what amount.
  2. you may co-opt someone to bid on your behalf, but use a cellphone to remain in contact with your co-optee and give direct instructions while the bidding is in progress.
  3. you can make prior arrangements with us to phone you just before bidding starts on the horse you are interested in. We will then appoint someone to remain in contact with you to take direct instructions while bidding is in progress.

If your bid is successful, remain in your seat until our auction secretary presents you with a purchase note to sign, which will confirm your purchase. If you have not registered prior to purchasing a horse, please do so immediately.


Please submit your purchase note to the auction office before the close of day to conclude the transaction. You will be presented with an invoice for settlement, which will reflect your closing bid plus 14% VAT,as well as an administration fee. The invoice can be settled immediately by secure internet transfer or bank guaranteed cheque. Normal cheques will also be accepted subject to bank clearance. All purchases must be settled within one week. Horses will be released once payment has been cleared.


Cover automatically commences at the fall of the hammer, but can be extended if required.


Finally, please ensure you receive your horse’s file from the auction office which contains the passport and complete veterinary, farrier and dental history.


Should you need to make arrangements to get your horse home horse carriers offering this service will be on standby. Callaho will provide your horse with a new halter and lead, but we recommend travel boots, a poll guard and a tail bandage for trucking. These can all be purchased from the tack vendors in the auction lounge.

All potential bidders please be aware of the following: Auctions are excluded from section 55(1), which expressly states that the cooling off period does not apply to goods bought on auction. Callaho would also like to bring to bidders’ attention that we will not be able to accommodate ‘buyer’s remorse’ and all winning bids will be payable on fall of the hammer.
